Introducing Characters in Opening Scenes - 'Pirates of the Caribbean'

Character 1 - Elizabeth Swan - She speaks eloquently and dresses well which reflects her high status.
The scene starts with a low camera shot of Elizabeth which suggests that she could be the protagonist and a very important role in the film as it makes her seem superior. She is singing which connotes her young innocence. Her feeling on edge when she is tapped on the shoulder and the fact that she’s the only female could potentially show that she could be a damsel in distress later.

Character 2 - MR Gibbs - His appearance is scruffy and he speaks with a more working class accent, he purposely scares Elizabeth and straight away the audience sees him as a villainous character. (This acts as a binary opposite which helps to drive the narrative forward)

Character 3 - the Lieutenant - he’s well spoken, he wears rich attire and he seems quite powerful over Mr Gibbs, this again shows a binary opposite, especially when talking about pirates.

Character 4 - Elizabeth’s dad - he plays the protector role where he’s trying to protect the innocent girl.

Character 5 - Pirates - in the opening, pirates are represented as the enemy by Mr Gibbs describing their negative traits and also by Elizabeth’s dad trying to protect her from pirates. The fire and the water within the mise-en-scene represents the destruction that the pirates may cause within the narrative and this reinforces them as antagonists against the protagonists (fire vs water).

Character 6 - Will Turner - Will Turner's position forces him to look up to Elizabeth and this represents his lower/pirate status. The close up of Will's necklace reveals that he’s a pirate. Elizabeth finds out that will is a pirate and instantly hides this information. This now represents Elizabeth as a strong character and potentially a hero who is able to protect others and the dramatic irony keeps the audience intrigued and wanting to find more.
