Introducing Enigma in Opening Scenes - 'The Sixth Sense'
The sound track chosen is very mysterious and spooky which sets the atmosphere and makes the audience on edge. The darkness during the titles and credits sets the horror genre.
The names of the actors and production crew are in a font that is giving a trembling effect which is projected on the audience and makes them feel scared of what is coming next.
The scene starts off in pitch black which creates mystery and the flickering close up shot of the light bulb has connotations of the supernatural, therefore creating enigma as the audience wants to know more.
The silence in the scene gives an eerie effect building up even more enigma.
The camera is positioned using a POV shot which suggest that the POV is an outsider spying which adds mystery and suspense.
The camera zooms in revealing a close up of the female and her facial expression suggests that she is worried as she looks like she’s seen something out of the ordinary, the audience doesn’t know what she’s seen which creates even more enigma and engages the audience further.
The lighting effect in the basement has her shadow projected on the screen, this could connote that she is not alone and someone is behind the shadow.
The voyeuristic long shot gives the effect that she is being spied on and adds more mystery for the viewer who is wanting to find out this characters fate. Her shivering adds more fear to the viewer as this links to the supernatural genres.
A few minutes later, the scene changes to where the man and women celebrate an award and everything appears normal, however the audience are aware that there is a potential intruder somewhere based on the scene before. For example, the dark lighting and the cold temperature is giving clues to the audience which creates more enigma and makes them want to watch to find out what happens next.
The wide shot of the living area and the stairs makes the audience feel like someone is watching from a far.
Upstairs the female notices that something isn’t right as the camera pans around to show some mess on the floor which includes a close up of broken glass and a disconnected phone. This really creates enigma and suspense as the audience are very much put on edge. This also poses questions: why is the phone disconnected? Why is there broken glass? Who did this? How can they call for help if something goes wrong? (This all adds enigma and draws the audience in).
